Well Appointed Wednesday

Welcome back to the Well Appointed Wednesday Series.  Today is Part III of The Well Appointed Wall.  If you are just joining us, you can go back and read Part I Wallpaper or Part II Paint;Neutral.  Now for our feature presentation:

The Well Appointed Wall Part III Paint:COLOR

So I got some emails that many of you failed the color test in Part II.  No worries, that is why you hire a designer!  LOL.  Neutrals can be very tricky.  Color can be easier, however, be careful as color packs a punch and if you make a booboo it will hit you right in the face!

Yikes!  Don’t make that mistake.

With so many colors to choose from, where do you start?

Before getting started….Have a plan!

Design Tip #1:  If you are painting multiple rooms, pick colors that work well together.  No hodge podge, there needs to be a harmonious scheme.

Design Tip #2:  Don’t pick too many colors, it will start to look choppy. Using the same color in more than one space will give the illusion of a more open larger space.

Design Tip #3:  Always try it out using a poster board.  Larger samples give you a better read and using a large board allows you to move it from wall to wall.  Every wall gets different light.

Design Tip #4:  Be sure to look at the color in daylight, dusk, and night time with artificial light.

Design Tip #5:  It is helpful to have a jumping off point ie; bedding, window treatments, furniture fabrics.

If you are starting from scratch and must start from scratch, find some color schemes that are appealing to you and work off those for your entire room.  A great place to get inspired is in nature.  Here are some great examples.

Another great tool is Benjamin Moore’s Personal Color Previewer.  You select the room, the style and play around with different paint combinations

Design Tip #6: Use the paint that designers and painters prefer, Benjamin Moore

Design Tip # 7: For best results, hire professionals

Design Tip #8:  If painting yourself be careful of drips!

helpful tip

Design Tip #9: Take care of the environment and dispose of paint properly.  Your town should have a designated day to bring your paint cans to the dump.  If disposing of them yourself pour kitty litter into the can, equal parts litter and paint.  The litter will absorb the paint and harden, you can then throw paint can away.

When done right, color can make a room spectacular!
